What Botswana’s Official Data Says About Pay
Salary sites publish a figure for every job title in Botswana. Official statistics publish one number for all employees and nothing by occupation. Here is the whole of it.
What is the average salary in Botswana, and what does a specific job pay?
Official statistics give an average across all employees of P6,093 a month. They do not disaggregate pay by occupation anywhere, so there is no official answer to what a software engineer, a nurse or a teacher earns. Every role-level salary figure you can find for Botswana — including the ones ranking above this page — comes from a self-reported aggregator or a recruitment survey with an undisclosed sample, not from Statistics Botswana.
Every figure in circulation
| Figure | Measures | Population | Period | Basis | Instrument |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| P6,093 | Average monthly earnings, all employees | Employees aged 15 and over | Fieldwork Nov 2024 – Nov 2025 | Survey | Botswana Multi-Topic Household Survey 2024/25The finest official grain that exists. It is an average across every employee in the country, so it describes no particular job. |
| None published | Average earnings by occupation | — | — | Survey | No Statistics Botswana release disaggregates pay by occupationThis absence is the single most important fact about Botswana salary data, and it is why this publication’s career guides carry no salary tables. |
| 6,043 | People employed in information and communication | All employed persons | Quarter 1, 2024 | Survey | Quarterly Multi-Topic Survey, Labour Force Module, Q1 2024Industry, not occupation. It counts everyone working in the sector, including people in non-technical roles, and excludes technical people employed elsewhere. |
| 2.8% | ICT share of GDP at current prices | — | Quarter 1, 2025 | Survey | Botswana Information and Communication Technology Stats Brief, Q1 2025Real growth over the year was 0.9%, which is the figure to weigh against any claim about the sector expanding quickly. |
How to quote these
- Treat any role-level salary figure for Botswana as non-official by default, because no official source produces one.
- Ask an aggregator for its sample size and collection method before quoting it. For Botswana specifically those samples are small and self-selected.
- Industry figures and occupation figures are not the same thing. "ICT employs 6,043 people" does not mean 6,043 technical workers.
- An average across all employees is not a typical wage. It is pulled by the top of the distribution and tells you little about a particular job.
