Official tables giving pay by occupation

Statistics Botswana

Botswana publishes real earnings data, which is more than many countries in the region manage. What it does not publish, and this is the part that matters when you are deciding what to study, is pay by job title.

That absence is the single most useful thing to understand about salary claims here.

The headline numbers

Statistics Botswana put average monthly cash earnings for all wage earners at P6,093 in the first quarter of 2024. Citizens averaged P6,035 and non-citizens P6,731. Men averaged P6,493 and women P5,697.

Narrow it to the formal sector and the average rises to P7,143. That figure had fallen 7.1% from P7,692 two quarters earlier, and the gap by citizenship widens sharply: P6,865 for citizens against P14,080 for non-citizens.

Self-employed people are excluded from all of it. These tables cover wage earners only.

How far down the data goes

Earnings are published by occupation, but only at the nine broad groups of the international classification. The full picture for the first quarter of 2024:

  • Professionals: P22,472
  • Managers: P17,794
  • Other specialised professional services: P16,956
  • Technicians and associate professionals: P12,913
  • Plant and machine operators and assemblers: P4,812
  • Clerical support services: P4,663
  • Craft and related trades: P4,281
  • Service and sales workers: P3,612
  • Elementary occupations: P1,410

"Professionals" covers an engineer, an accountant, a nurse and a lawyer in one number. That is as fine as Botswana official statistics get. There is no official figure for a software developer, a teacher, a mechanical engineer or any other named role, and the establishment survey that once collected pay directly from employer payrolls has not published since December 2018.

So when a site quotes you a precise salary for a job title in Botswana, it is not reading an official source, because no official source carries that number. It is reading self-reported survey data from a salary aggregator. That may still be informative, but it is a different kind of claim, and it should be labelled as one.

By industry, which is where the sector signal lives

Formal sector averages by industry in the same quarter put mining and quarrying at P22,283 and finance and insurance at P19,635 at the top. Information and communication sits at P9,106, professional, scientific and technical at P10,139, and education at P10,866. At the other end, agriculture is P2,880, accommodation and food service P2,852, and administrative and support services P2,838.

Read those as whole-industry averages including every non-technical role in the sector, not as a salary for a job inside it. The size of the ICT sector is worth knowing before reading too much into its average.

The floor

The minimum wage is set by the Regulation of Minimum Wages Order, as amended by Statutory Instrument No. 7 of 2024. It is P9.06 an hour across building and construction, wholesale and retail trade, manufacturing, hotels and catering, the motor trade, and private security. Domestic service and agriculture are set at P1,500 a month.

In November 2025 the Minister of Labour and Home Affairs gave the monthly equivalent of the hourly rate as P2,120.04, and said government was working toward raising the minimum to P4,000. No instrument enacting that had been made at the time of writing.

Are wages keeping up

The Bank of Botswana is the only body to have quantified this recently, and its assessment is blunt: the average monthly wage rose 1.1%, from P6,029 in the third quarter of 2023 to P6,093 in the first quarter of 2024, which it describes as limited growth in real wages. It has repeated that judgement in every monetary policy report since.

Neither Statistics Botswana nor the Bank publishes a deflated real-earnings index, so there is no official real-wage series to quote. The nominal change and the Bank’s own wording are as far as the evidence goes.

How to use this

Three practical rules follow from the shape of the data. Compare yourself to an occupation group and an industry, not to a job title. Check which quarter a figure refers to, because these move sharply. And treat any Botswana salary for a named role as unofficial, whatever confidence it is presented with.

If you are weighing what to learn against what it might pay, the skills employers say are growing is a better input than a salary table, and the degree piece covers what a qualification is now worth on its own.
