Getting Paid From Abroad, From Botswana
No exchange controls since 1999, PayPal withdrawals through one bank, and a transfer service that cannot pay out in pula at all.
If the local technology sector is small, and it is, then the practical question for most people reading this is not which Gaborone employer to join. It is whether money from outside the country can reach you without being eaten on the way in.
The answer is mostly yes, with one specific trap.
The rule that makes this possible
Botswana abolished all remaining forms of foreign exchange control in February 1999. There is no approval to seek and no limit to clear for receiving a payment from a foreign client or employer. That is not true everywhere in the region, and it is the single most important fact about working remotely from here.
The rails, one at a time
Bank transfer works, and for a salaried remote arrangement it is usually what an employer or an employer-of-record will propose.
PayPal has operated a local withdrawal service in partnership with First National Bank since 2016, letting Batswana receive payments in up to 26 currencies and withdraw into a qualifying FNB account, with FNB converting dollars to pula at its own rate. Two things follow: the conversion rate is the bank’s, not the market’s, and the path assumes an account at one specific bank.
Wise is the trap. The pula does not appear among the currencies Wise can send to. A client who offers to pay you "by Wise" is proposing something that cannot settle into a pula account. It can still work if the money lands in a US dollar, euro or sterling account, which is a different arrangement and worth agreeing explicitly before the first invoice.
Payoneer is commonly recommended in freelancing advice. We could not verify its availability or any restrictions for Botswana from the company itself, so this piece does not tell you it works. Check it against your own account before relying on it.
What people here actually use online
Among Batswana who buy online, 41.0% pay by debit card or electronic bank transfer and 38.1% by credit card. Cash on delivery is still 30.2%. Mobile money is 14.9%, and a service such as PayPal is 12.3%.
That matters in two directions. Receiving from abroad is a card and bank story, not a wallet story, which is the opposite of how domestic payments work. The domestic picture is covered in Botswana’s four mobile wallets.
What nobody can tell you
How many Batswana already do this. There is no published figure for platform or freelance work in Botswana from any source we could find. The international research that measures online labour supply covers South Africa, Kenya, Nigeria and Ghana, and does not break Botswana out.
So if someone quotes you a number of Batswana freelancers, ask where it came from. In the absence of data, the honest statement is that the activity exists and its scale is unmeasured.
Before you take the work
Three things to settle in writing, because none of them is governed by the payment rail itself: which currency the contract is denominated in, who absorbs the conversion spread, and which side carries the transfer fee. A rate that looks good in dollars can lose several per cent between the client’s bank and yours, and that spread is negotiable at the contract stage and nowhere else.
The wider economics of this, including what identical work pays in different countries, is covered in the freelance pay gap, and the odds of actually earning on a platform in the freelancing funnel. If you are weighing it against a local role, the size of the ICT sector is the context.
Frequently asked
Can I receive money from abroad in Botswana?
Yes. Botswana abolished all remaining foreign exchange controls in February 1999, so there is no approval requirement or limit on receiving payments from abroad. Bank transfer, cards and PayPal through First National Bank all work.
Does Wise work in Botswana?
Not for pula payouts. The Botswana pula is not among the currencies Wise lists as able to send to. A Wise payment can still reach you if it lands in a US dollar, euro or sterling account.
