AI Won’t Replace Junior Developers. It Will Change What “Junior” Means.
The automation argument gets the mechanism wrong. Code generation does not remove the junior role, it removes the tasks juniors used to learn on.
The language the web runs on. Still the fastest route into paid software work in Botswana, and the one most junior roles assume you already have.

3-6 months to employable
JavaScript is the only language that runs in every browser without being installed, which is why it remains the shortest route into paid software work: the thing you build is immediately something another person can open, use and judge.
What the job actually consists of is not writing JavaScript from a blank file. It is reading a codebase somebody else wrote, often years ago and under pressure, and changing one part of it without breaking three others. Most working hours go on understanding, not producing.
Depth in one language, demonstrated by debugging rather than by recall. An interview that matters will put unfamiliar code in front of you and ask what it does. Syntax questions are a screening shortcut; the real assessment is whether you can form a hypothesis about why something fails and then test it.
Build one thing with a real user, even if that user is you, and keep it running for six months. Maintenance teaches what construction cannot: you will meet your own decisions again, discover which of them were wrong, and learn why experienced engineers are so careful about things that look like overcaution from outside.
Contributing a small fix to an existing open-source project is worth more than another tutorial project, because it forces the exact skill employers screen for — working inside code you did not write, to a standard someone else enforces.
Three finished, deployed things beat twelve half-built ones. Finished means another person can use it without asking you anything. Each wants a README explaining the decisions rather than the setup commands, because the decisions are what a reviewer is reading for.
JavaScript on its own no longer gets anybody hired. The number of people who have completed an introductory course is very large, and that is the pool you are in by default. What moves you out of it is evidence of finishing — projects completed after they stopped being interesting. That is also the single most common gap in junior applications, and we go through what employers say about it in what a junior engineer now needs.
What software engineers actually do, which skills get people hired in Botswana, and the routes in that work without a computer science degree.

Bootcamps are neither a scam nor a shortcut. They sell structure and a deadline, which is worth a lot to some people and nothing to others.
Information and communication accounted for 6,043 jobs, 0.8% of employment and 2.8% of GDP. The sector is real, and it is small.
Household internet access reached 68.9% in 2024 while computer use fell from 41.4% to 32.2%. That changes how you can learn to code.
Four serious studies measured it and they disagree. The disagreement is the finding: what AI does to your speed depends almost entirely on the codebase.
The gap between what junior engineers study and what junior engineers are hired for has widened. Here is what is actually on the other side of it.
